Stephen practised as a professional photographer working from a studio in central London for over 20 years. This was principally commercial work, commissions from London based advertising and graphic design agencies, as well as for corporate brochures. High quality silver/gelatine prints produced from an in-house darkroom were a speciality. Some of his personal work was exhibited in central London spaces.
After pursuing a different career, he had not taken any new photographs until 2017 when he rekindled his interest in the medium. He travels through France frequently and knows the south-west of France well, particularly the department of the Lot. A large proportion of the current images were taken in the main city of Cahors or in the nearby in the small towns and villages.
The photographs are characterised by strong graphic shapes of urban locations. In the main of domestic, commercial, and industrial buildings from an earlier era. They reveal a hidden geometry, textures, less obvious compositions, and use a desaturated colour palette. They are often inspired by the more muted tones of some impressionist/post-impressionist painters, rather than other photographers. Recent projects feature a more contemporary style with a little more colour emphasis.
“Superb photos of a universe that the eyes do not see anymore.”
